Short Form : Full Form

WHAT IS FULL FORM?

This is easy. The Whitworth Screw Thread Form found from the different Published criteria for: BSP, BSPP, BSPT, BSW, BSF, G series, R series, all need a radius screw thread and screw thread crest for the inner screw thread and the outside screw thread.

Could you find it's Full Form?

WHAT IS TRUNCATED? Truncated is a very flexible word. The definitions vary from complicated to simple and its usage covers a range of subjects.

Look it up and see what I mean.

Cutting the radius and substituting it essentially shortening the thread form occasionally modifies the Whitworth screw thread type. When the Whitworth screw thread is called: alternately, or Truncated: Modified, it implies that it's been modified from the screw thread standard's essentials.

The drawing shows the modification. From the thread crest the radius is eliminated and replaced with a positioned in the point between the flank and the radius angles.

The form of the screw thread is take or give monitored by the GO screw thread gage and undefined.

What could be found in the screw thread is anything from complete radius that is sharp to flatted to a.

The thread shape depends upon the form of the screw thread cutting instrument and to a large extent.

Wait a minute.

Did I say: it's been modified from the demands of the screw thread standard?
Doesn't that mean that it no longer meets also the demands of the standard?
Why would one want to produce a thread which doesn't conform to the standard?
Why is deviation by the standard so common that it demands discussion on this webpage?

Time for a little history. HISTORY: Back in World War I and then World War II era, when the United States and UK were working together with war machines, the United States Machinists necessary to create parts to fit British equipment.

The parts that match British equipment had Whitworth form threads.

Since The British thread was the Whitworth thread form, the British gage manufacturers had developed distinct thread grinding equipment that could easily reproduce the Whitworth screw thread form.

The Sellers screw thread form doesn't require radii, it's got a flat thread crest and root.

Since the United States gage manufacturers work together with the flat root and crest they hadn't developed a good method to make also the radius root and crest.

To get a thread gage which was sufficiently good to complete the job the gage manufacturers decided to truncate the BSP gages comparable To how they create gages for the J series that also requires a radius on the part.
